I have a customer who rang me up today demanding to know why an engineer of ours passed the emergency lighting in their building, when a engineer/salesman from a rival company doorstepped them and said all their emergency lights were "illegal" because they had red leds not green ones, required by the new regs.
Am I missing something here or are some companies that desperate for business.
Surely the manufacturer would be aware of this, not got standards handy (on a pen drive in the car). Sounds like a desparado sales technique, though could be corrected.
the bloke's a kok, there are a lot of them around.

I had something similar recently with a fire system. Our new regs have done away with 4 core cable but are obviously not retrospective. I went to a site where the client was told that all the 4 core had to be replaced. Nearly the whole install was done in 4 core so it was never gonna happen. They were also told that a ZX2e had to be replaced because the buttons on the door needed some gentle persuasion to be used??? Why not just replace the door?

This crowd were either desperate for business or hadn't a bleedin clue! But it does seem to be happening more and more. Sign of the times I suppose.
With regards the regs and four core cable, what is the justification for it?
I mean if you have spurred a single detector on a loop or conventional system or a bell for that matter, why is four core a problem?
The old indicator, i.e Red led was to indicate that the charger was working, EU in their wisdom decided that green would be the new colour as it indicated safety and all systems go

Old units with red leds are still ok, new units have green leds, so yes you will have a mixture on many sites

If the salesman wants to be pointed in the right direction, he can call Chris Watts.

From IS3218:2009 :

Ring circuits forming loops of detectors or sounders shall employ a separate and distinct route for the feed and return paths, i.e. four-core or multi-core cable shall not be employed to carry both the feed and return cable cores.

The idea of it is that if there is an installation that has alot of 4 core/multicore cable, you would potentially lose whole zones with one cable fault. This is obviously worst case. When we did our refresher on the new standards, the point was made about one or two detectors. But we were told that there were no exceptions. Pain in the hole really.

Is that in the BS though? thats the Irish standard is it not but I guess that is where you are
